A practical solution to reduced weaning stress

Fertility and mothering ability are important factors in livestock breeding and both are underpinned by nutritional health of the animals. However, unless calves, lambs or kids reach weaning there is little value in fertility.

Once the young animals have reached weaning age there are more factors that producers need to take into consideration. Beef producers particularly are very aware of the stress involved in weaning their cattle, although it is not easily measured. Weight loss, bawling cattle and broken fences are well known symptoms of the stress of weaning. Producers will have a preferred weaning method to reduce the stress involved and the subsequent loss in production.

The principle behind EasyWean® noserings

The reason EasyWean® works is twofold. Firstly the calf is less able to access the teat with a nosering flopping around in front of its mouth. Secondly the cow is made uncomfortable with the calf’s persistent attempts, with the spikes causing her to move away from the calf. As a result the lactation is supressed but the calf does not suffer the usual growth setback at weaning caused by separation and emotional stress.

On our own property we have been using the EasyWean® noserings since 1999. We have made some design improvements, but continue to use previous versions to test longevity. Many noserings are now on their 10th weaning and still going strong. We would not consider returning to yard weaning.
